The often repeated Chinese Proverb ‘Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime’ doesn’t work in the context of crafts people and artisans. We have learnt that there are plenty of well-trained fishermen, but they often don’t have the right bait or a large enough pond. Through Loom Tree and the Loom Tree Foundation our vision is to help the artisan crafts people of Asia realise their global market potential. We design beautiful clothing and lifestyle products that make use of these artisan skills, connecting producers to consumers through transparent supply chains.
The Loom Tree Foundation is built on the same values and principles of fair trade and authenticity as the Loom Tree brand. These values distinguish and guide us. We conduct our business in a socially responsible and ethical manner, embracing creativity and diversity. We support universal human rights, protect the environment, sustain heritage and help the communities we work with prosper.
A percentage of Loom Tree sales revenue goes to support the Loom Tree Foundation, which in turn, supports producers on the ground. A percentage of revenue from each item we sell goes directly into community projects in Asia. We are keen that our consumers feel connected to the provenance of their garments so that every time they wear it they not only look great but also remember who they have helped. We are also working with several designers who are interested in our aims of sustaining heritage and supporting communities.
We are committed to creating and supporting programs that bring about sustainable change through education, training and use of up-to-date technology. In working with local NGOs, our goals through the Loom Tree Foundation are to:
- Develop training and income generation projects in partnership with local NGOs and Co-operatives
- Improve access to education
- Improve access to sustainable raw materials and educate producers on environmentally-friendly production processes
